This is the best classic apple crumble recipe! It has a flavorful apple filling and crunchy streusel topping, and it’s baked until juicy and golden brown.

Baked apple crumble with a crunchy streusel topping and a juicy apple filling in a round pie dish.

Apple crumble is the ultimate fall dessert. With a layer of sweet and tender apples underneath a blanket of crumbly streusel, the baked fruit dessert is so cozy and comforting.

Top the warm crumble with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make it even more irresistible.

This recipe is definitely one of those basic desserts you should try. It’s simple and delicious.

This apple crumble recipe is made without oats.

Apple Crumble or Apple Crisp?

Fruit crumbles and crisps are very similar fruit desserts. Both consist of a layer of fruit covered with a crumbly streusel topping.

The main difference is that fruit crisps usually contain oats while fruit crumbles don’t. However, the two terms are often used interchangeably these days.

Apple Crumble Ingredients

The recipe could not be easier. Besides apples, you need just four ingredients: sugar, cinnamon, flour, and butter.

Be sure to use firm apples for baking that won’t become mushy when baked. A mix of both sweet and tart apples is best for an apple crumble.

How to Make the Best Apple Crumble

Set an oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

To prepare the topping, combine the flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Use your hands or a pastry cutter to work in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. Set aside in the refrigerator.

To prepare the filling, toss the apples with the sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl until completely coated. Spread evenly in a 9-in round dish or an 8-in square pan or baking dish.

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the filling.

Bake for 40 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Let cool at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature on its own or topped with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of low-fat Greek yogurt.

Vegan Apple Crumble

To make the recipe vegan, use vegan butter.

  • 1/3 cup (67 g) raw cane sugar or granulated sugar (see Notes!)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/3 cup (76 g) unsalted butter, softened

For the Filling

  • 4 large or 5 medium apples, peeled, cored, sliced, and halved
  • 1 tablespoon (12.5 g) raw cane sugar or granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  • Set an oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Notes

Vegan Option: To make the crumble vegan, use vegan butter.
Recipe Variation: For a little crunch or variety, add 1/4 cup (30 g) of walnuts or pecans and/or 1/4 cup (25 g) of rolled oats.
You can put the apples directly into the baking dish and save on a bowl.
To make the apple crumble healthier, you can also use whole-wheat flour and coconut sugar. You can omit the sweetener in the filling, especially if your apples are already sweet. Also, feel free to reduce the amount of sugar in the topping to 1/4 cup (50 g).
