Frozen chocolate-covered bananas are an easy and fun summer treat!
I’ve always been a fan of chocolate-covered bananas and have always enjoyed bananas in chocolate fondue. Then I came across the frozen version and was thrilled. They are a refreshing and healthy snack on hot summer days and easy and fun to make! Kids love them!
You just need bananas, a chocolate of your choice, and, if desired, a topping of your choice.
When it comes to bananas, you can choose any size as well as your preferred stage of ripeness, it just depends on your personal taste.
You can use any chocolate, such as white chocolate, milk chocolate, semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate. Maybe you can also think of a fancy type of chocolate.
There are no limits to your creativity when it comes to toppings. Below you will find a few ideas. Maybe you have some other ideas. Please let me know in the comments if you have any!
Topping Ideas for Frozen Chocolate-Covered Bananas
- Sprinkles
- Melted chocolate for drizzling (preferably a different type of chocolate than the one used for dipping)
- Chopped nuts (almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, etc.)
- Seeds (chia seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, etc.)
- Freeze-dried or dried fruits (e.g. raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate)
- Shredded coconut
- Cacoa nibs
- Nut butter
As long as you use vegan chocolate and vegan toppings, your frozen chocolate-covered bananas can also be vegan. Keep in mind that sugar sprinkles, typically because of the red dye, are not always vegan. It’s best to choose sugar sprinkles that are made with natural food colorings anyway.

Frozen Chocolate-Covered Bananas
Ingredients
For the Chocolate-Covered Bananas
- 2 bananas, any size and stage of ripeness
- 1 cup (170 g) chocolate of choice, best quality, broken into small pieces
- Optional: 1 teaspoon (5 g) vegetable oil, for a thinner consistency that makes dipping easier
Optional Toppings
- Sprinkles, melted chocolate, chopped nuts, seeds, freeze-dried or dried fruits, shredded coconut, cacoa nibs, nut butter
Equipment
- 4 cake pop sticks or popsicle sticks
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Peel the bananas and cut in half widthwise. Carefully insert a cake pop stick or popsicle stick into the cut side of each banana half.
- Place the bananas on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour. Prepare your desired toppings (see ideas earlier in this post).
- Melt the chocolate pieces (with the oil, if using) in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally. Remove the bowl with the chocolate from the saucepan, pat dry and set aside.
- Remove the bananas from the freezer. Transfer the melted chocolate to a tall, narrow glass. Dip the banana halves, one at a time, in the chocolate. Be sure to let all excess chocolate drip off. Immediately decorate the banana with the prepared toppings (the chocolate will quickly set on the frozen bananas), and place them back on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process until all banana halves are coated and decorated.
- Return them to the freezer for at least 10 minutes. After about 45 minutes, the chocolate will be really crisp and the bananas will be even more refreshing!

Since bananas are one of the most energy-boosting foods and are valued in the diets of young children and in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, I think this recipe is a great idea. I always have bananas on my grocery list!
