Caprese salad is a classic Italian salad named after the Italian island of Capri and is assumed to have originated there.

You’re probably familiar with this side dish, so it might be more of a reminder for you to make it rather than a recipe. Given the fact that it can hardly be called a recipe since it’s so simple. Either way, it’s so good that I just had to write it down.

Sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vingear and sprinkled with salt and pepper to create a caprese salad.

Caprese Salad Ingredients

Caprese salad is made of just a few ingredients, 5 ingredients to be exact: ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to round it off. Use the best fresh high-quality ingredients to get the best out of it.

How to Make Caprese Salad

This salad is so quick and easy to make. You’ll start by slicing the tomatoes and mozzarella cheese before arranging them alongside fresh basil leaves, drizzling with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and sprinkling with salt and pepper to finish.

The fresh and cold ingredients make this delicious summer salad perfect for hot summer days! It’s truly a summertime classic!

This caprese salad is full of juicy tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil leaves drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for a simple and delicious summer side dish!

Ingredients

  • 3 large tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 (8-ounce) ball fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • Handful of fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon (14 g) olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction
  • Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Add a slice of tomato to a plate, then add a slice of mozzarella on top followed by a basil leaf. Keep alternating until the ingredients are used up. (The stacks can half cover each other or you can arrange them next to each other.)
  • Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Notes

TOMATO SIZE NOTE: For the recipe photos, I used cherry tomatoes and cut the mozzarella into smaller pieces to match. If you want to use cherry tomatoes, you’ll need about 12 to 15 of them.
