Turn your freshly picked apples into this easy apple compote! Made of just 2 ingredients and ready in no time, enjoy on its own or serve on pancakes, waffles, yogurt, and more!

Say hello to one of your new favorite fall recipes that you’ll probably be making again and again!

Not only because it’s incredibly easy to make, but also because it tastes delicious! It actually tastes cozy and amazing, literally like fall! And it will also make your kitchen and house smell like fall!

Obviously, you don’t have to use freshly picked apples. Purchased ones will do, especially those you find at the farmers market. Either way, be sure to make the most of the peak apple season!

Apple compote is one of the things I make on repeat in the fall. You can make your own apple compote all year round. It’s just so nice and easy to make from scratch!

The whole recipe is made of just 2 ingredients. With 5 minutes of prep and 15 minutes of cooking time, it’s made in a breeze!

Easy Apple Compote Ingredients

The list of ingredients is short!

  • Apples
  • Sugar

Agave, maple syrup, coconut sugar, or granulated sugar may all be substituted for the raw cane sugar.

The amount of sweetener to use will depend on whether the apples you’re using are sweet or tart, as well as your personal taste.

You can add 1 tablespoon of water before cooking if you know from the outset that you prefer your apple compote to be more on the mushy side.

You can also add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to enhance the flavor and help preserve it.

You can add a cinnamon stick or ground spices, like ground cinnamon, before cooking.

How to Make Easy Apple Compote

Let’s go over how to make this easy 2-ingredient recipe.

In a medium saucepan, combine the apples and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the saucepan with a lid. Stirring occasionally, simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are soft and tender.

If you want to reduce the size of the chunks or prefer a slightly mushier consistency, stir using a spoon to break the apples up a bit until it reaches your desired consistency.

Let the compote cool a few minutes before serving. Serve warm or cold. To store, let cool completely.

Store leftover apple compote covered in a bowl or in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should last for at least 5 days, if not a week.

This recipe yields a fairly small amount, so feel free to multiply the recipe if you want to make more.

Apple Compote Serving Suggestions

Other than serving it on pancakes, waffles, and yogurt, you can serve homemade apple compote over ice cream, whipped cream, French toast, cheesecake, chia pudding, rice pudding, or oatmeal. It’s delicious on its own too, as little treat in between or for dessert.

  • 1 pound apples, peeled, cored, and diced into 1/2-inch cubes (see Notes!)
  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) raw cane sugar (see Notes!)

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the apples and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the saucepan with a lid. Stirring occasionally, simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are soft and tender.
  • If you want to reduce the size of the chunks or prefer a slightly mushier consistency, stir using a spoon to break the apples up a bit until it reaches your desired consistency.

Notes

APPLE NOTES: The weight of the apples in the recipe refers to apples that have already been peeled and cored. You need about 4 small apples for the recipe, which equals about 600 g of apples.
I dice the apples into 1/2-inch cubes, becauce I prefer rather smaller chunks. But you’re welcome to cut them into larger pieces, if you prefer. Just keep in mind that you may need to adjust the cooking time slightly.
HOW TO STORE: Store leftover apple compote covered in a bowl or in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should last for at least 5 days, if not a week.
